Trang Islands named by Lonely Planet in top 10 Asian destinations

The Trang Islands in southern Thailand have been named in the top 10 places to visit in Asia by Lonely Planet.

The leading travel publisher put together a list of their best spots for the next 12 months.

It includes Hokkaidō in Japan, Shànghǎi in China, the Con Dao Islands, Vietnam and Ipoh in Malaysia.

Thailand’s Trang Islands can be found off the Andaman Coast and about three hours from the Malaysian border.

They include Koh Ngai (Hai), Koh Mook (Muk), Koh Kradan, Koh Libong, Koh Sukorn (Mu), Koh Laoliang and Koh Petra.

The Loneley Planet said the Trang Islands ‘pack the same knockout punch as their more famous Andaman Coast neighbours, Phuket, Ko Phi-Phi and Ko Lanta’.

It added that Trang Islands ‘lack the crowds’ and described how ‘blonde beaches glisten amid shards of jungle-topped karst; beachfront bungalows line crescents of squeaky sand; rainbows of fish flit through the aquamarine sea.’

‘Go, now – while these sleepy islands bask in untouched splendour.’

The islands are certainly not undiscovered, but they are quieter than other popular destinations in Thailand.

Here’s the Lonely Planet’s list of the top ten places in Asia to visit in the next 12 months…

1. Hokkaidō, Japan

2. Shànghǎi, China

3. Jeonju, South Korea

4. Con Dao Islands, Vietnam
